Today, you embark on the next chapter of your life. First of all, let me first say a big congratulations to you for wanting to start your own business! You are charting your own course in this crazy world of business especially during these trying times of Covid-19.  You have decided to take this challenge and to do something positive, not letting anything get in the way of your dreams. In spite of the challenging times we are currently living in, this is the perfect time to let your entrepreneurial resilience shine.

It won’t be easy. You will have a lot of ups and downs along this journey.  But I am here to tell you that they will only make you stronger.  The ups and downs made me who I am today and I would not have had it any other way.  Having a few bumps along the way when starting this journey is normal and should be expected.  Do not let them scare you away. Nothing worth doing should ever be easy.

Some of these ups and downs will be your very own mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes and you will learn from them and become a better entrepreneur and business owner as a result. Embrace them and share your experiences. It is important to learn from other people’s errors too.  Remember that many mistakes are actually happy accidents – you could discover something amazing that sets the business world on its ear.

It is crucial that your business can answer the needs required by customers in a post-pandemic world. Now is probably not the best time to launch a catering business for example but maybe that idea could be pivoted into some sort of meal service that delivers. Take the time right now to research the market – what are the problems that consumers are facing and how can you solve them? Be innovative. Be inventive and do your homework.

Make sure you take the time to get all your ducks in a row. If we have learned anything through this pandemic, it is how to slow down. Learn about your business. Take this opportunity to map out all the steps you need to set a business up for success. Rushing into opening day will almost guarantee your closing one. Things that will take more time right now are permits, licenses, incorporation, loans etc. Make your plan. Set out your steps. Get the help you need for the parts you don’t know how to do.

I am proud of all future small business owners for taking this leap of faith and believe you can do it! Don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t.  They just don’t have the same passion you do.  Never lose that spark, drive and passion. March onward –  follow your entrepreneur dreams and good luck on this exciting journey.
